If you listen to the printer companies, using discount ink cartridges can damage your printer and cause poor print quality. Is this justified or is it just their way of scaring you into buying the original brand of ink?
Frankly, it's a bit of both. While it's true that using the wrong type of ink can damage your printer, that doesn't mean that all discount cartridges are bad.
Most of today's inkjet printers use very specific types of ink. If you were to use the ink from an HP printer in an Epson cartridge, for example, the printing would be very poot and it could cause problems with your printer.
The key to getting good results with discount cartridges is to be sure that you get one that is compatible with your particular brand and model of printer. As long as you buy them from a reputable supplier and make sure you get the right model for your printer, you shouldn't have any problems.
The warranty issue is a whole different topic, however. Using discount cartridges in your printer will not void your warranty. The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act ensures that using a different brand of ink in your printer cannot void your warranty.
This law was enacted several years ago, so it's not that common to hear this warning any more. Before the act was passed, this was a common warning from many printer companies, as a way to convince you to stick with the original (more expensive) ink cartridges.
Let's face it - the printer companies make their money by selling ink cartridges. They make little or nothing when you buy the printer itself - in fact, many times they lose money up front to get you to buy the ink over a longer period of time.
Keep this in mind when you're comparing ink prices and reading the various warnings about why you should be using the original cartridges.
